Frequently asked questions

ITR-1 SAHAJ if income is up to ₹50 lakh from salary / pension, one house property, and other sources (interest, dividend). ITR-2 if income exceeds ₹50 lakh, has capital gains, multiple house property, foreign income, or agricultural income above ₹5,000. ITR-3 if business income also exists.

ITR-1 / ITR-2 due date for salaried individuals for AY 2026-27 (FY 2025-26) is 31 July 2026. Belated filing under Section 139(4) is allowed up to 31 December 2026 with Section 234F late fee of ₹1,000 (income ≤ ₹5L) or ₹5,000 (income > ₹5L).

HRA exemption is minimum of: (i) actual HRA received, (ii) rent paid minus 10% of salary (basic + DA), (iii) 50% of salary if metro (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata) or 40% of salary if non-metro. Rent receipts from landlord required; landlord PAN mandatory if annual rent > ₹1 lakh.

Section 80C allows deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh for EPF, PPF, ELSS, LIC premium, NSC, home loan principal repayment, tuition fees, ULIP, tax-saver FDs, and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana. Aggregate across all eligible investments. Additional ₹50,000 NPS available under Section 80CCD(1B).

Section 80D mediclaim premium deduction: ₹25,000 for self / family / spouse, additional ₹25,000 for parents (₹50,000 if senior citizen), additional ₹5,000 for preventive health check-up. Senior citizens can claim up to ₹50,000 for self / family and ₹50,000 for parents — total up to ₹1 lakh for self + parents (both senior citizens).

Section 80CCD(1B) allows additional deduction of ₹50,000 over and above Section 80C for contribution to NPS Tier-I account. Available to salaried employees and self-employed. Combined with Section 80CCD(1) employer contribution of up to 10% of salary, total NPS deduction can reach ₹2 lakh (Section 80CCD(1) + 80CCD(1B) + 80CCD(2)).

ITR-1 SAHAJ for salaried starts from ₹499 at FinTax24. ITR-2 with capital gains / multiple house property starts from ₹999. HRA exemption claim and home loan interest included. Multi-Form 16 consolidation and prior year rectification included at no extra cost.

No. Salaried employees with ESOP income, capital gains on ESOP sale, or sale of RSU must file ITR-2 or ITR-3 depending on the income heads. ITR-1 SAHAJ is for pure salary / pension + one house property + other sources only. ESOP perquisite at exercise is taxable as salary; ESOP sale is capital gain.

ITR-1 SAHAJ is available for resident individuals with total income up to ₹50 lakh for AY 2026-27 from salary, one house property, and other sources (interest, dividend, family pension). If total income exceeds ₹50 lakh, the taxpayer must file ITR-2 instead. Income from capital gains, business, profession, foreign assets, or more than one house property disqualifies ITR-1 SAHAJ at any income level. The ₹50 lakh ceiling includes all heads of income — salary, house property, and other sources combined.

About this service

## Who Can File ITR-1 SAHAJ? ITR-1 SAHAJ is the simplest Income Tax Return form for salaried individuals in India. It is available for resident individuals whose total income for AY 2026-27 consists only of salary or pension from one employer. It is also available for income from one self-occupied or let-out house property. It is available for other sources such as interest from savings accounts, fixed deposits, or dividends. It does not cover capital gains, business income, profession income, foreign assets, or multiple house properties. **The ₹50 lakh ceiling** is the most important threshold on this form. It applies to your total income across all three heads combined. If you have salary of ₹42 lakh, interest income of ₹5 lakh, and a let-out property showing ₹4 lakh profit, your total is ₹51 lakh. This is above the ITR-1 SAHAJ ceiling, and you must file ITR-2 instead. The ceiling is not per head of income. It is the sum of everything you report. **Form 16 is the starting point.** Your employer deducts TDS based on your declared investments. The employer declares your salary income, professional tax, and deductions in Form 16. You receive a Part A (TDS certificate) and Part B (salary breakup). FinTax24 reconciles your Form 16 with your Form 26AS and Annual Information Statement (AIS) to identify any TDS mismatches before filing. Mismatches are the most common reason refunds are delayed or notices are issued under Section 143(1)(a). **Deduction planning** under Sections 80C to 80U is built into the filing. Key limits: ₹1.5 lakh under Section 80C (LIC, PPF, EPF, home loan principal, tuition fees), ₹50,000 under Section 80CCD(1B) for NPS contributions, ₹25,000 to ₹1,00,000 under Section 80D for mediclim (higher for senior citizens), and Section 80G for donations. If you have a home loan, Section 24(b) allows deduction of up to ₹2 lakh on self-occupied property interest. **House property reporting** in ITR-1 SAHAJ covers one property only. Self-occupied property gets the standard 30% maintenance deduction. It also gets interest deduction up to ₹2 lakh. Let-out property requires rental income declaration with corresponding expenses. If you have a home loan on a self-occupied property with no rental income, the interest deduction under Section 24(b) is capped at ₹2 lakh. Excess interest is not deductible. **Due date for AY 2026-27 is 31 July 2026.** Late filing under Section 139(4) attracts a fee of ₹1,000 if your income is up to ₹5 lakh. It attracts ₹5,000 if your income is above ₹5 lakh. Additionally, you cannot carry forward house property losses or other losses to subsequent years if the original return was not filed on time. Filing on time also keeps you eligible for the most favourable tax regime comparison under Section 139(5). FinTax24 files ITR-1 SAHAJ for salaried employees across Gujarat. This includes Bhavnagar, Surat, Ahmedabad, and Rajkot. Same-day e-filing and Aadhaar OTP verification are included.
