HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) code is a 6-8 digit code used to classify goods in GST. It is mandatory for GST invoices and helps determine the applicable GST rate for products.
For businesses with turnover above ₹5 crore, 6-digit HSN code is mandatory. For turnover between ₹1.5 crore to ₹5 crore, 4-digit code is required. Below ₹1.5 crore, 2-digit code is sufficient.
The official CBIC HSN_SAC master classifies products but does not carry a rate column — GST rates are published separately in the rate schedule (notifications 1/2017 and 2/2017) and change over time. Publishing rates here could show you a stale figure. Find your code here first, then verify the current rate in the CBIC rate schedule, or ask our experts on WhatsApp.
Using incorrect HSN code can lead to incorrect GST rate application, notices from GST department, and potential penalties.
Once filed, you cannot directly change the HSN code in filed returns. However, you can make corrections in subsequent periods or file a revised return if within the allowed time period.
The complete HSN code list is available on the CBIC website at tutorial.gst.gov.in. You can download the official HSN_SAC.xlsx file or use our HSN Code Finder to search 20,000+ codes instantly.
The first 6 digits of HSN code are internationally standardized by WCO (World Customs Organization). Countries can add additional digits for more specific classification at the national level.
