FSSAI Renewal is not optional — it is the annual compliance moment that determines whether a food business can keep selling. Every FSSAI license carries an expiry date. Basic, State, or Central — all have one. The window to file a renewal application opens 30 days before that date. Section 31 of the FSSAI Act, 2006 makes renewal filing mandatory. The 30-day buffer is the hard deadline beyond which a late fee of ₹100 per day accrues. For a restaurant in Prahlad Nagar, a spice processor in Surat, or a dairy packing unit in Rajkot, an expired FSSAI number is not a paperwork problem. It is the moment Swiggy and Zomato deactivate the listing. The municipal inspector issues a show-cause notice. The business has no legal cover to operate.
All Three Tiers Follow the Same 30-Day Rule — But the Consequences Are Different
Basic Registration, State License, and Central License all require renewal on FoSCoS 2.0. This is the Food Safety Compliance System upgraded by FSSAI in 2024. The filing workflow is the same as the original application. Log in. Select the existing 14-digit number. Confirm business details. Upload updated documents. Pay the renewal fee. What changes by tier is the processing timeline and whether an inspection is triggered. Basic Registration renewals are typically issued within 7 working days with no inspection. State License renewals take up to 30 days. They may involve a review by the Designated Officer if the premises, product list, or ownership has changed. Central License renewals run up to 60 days. They routinely require a full inspection of the manufacturing or processing facility before the renewed certificate is issued.
The most common reason a renewal application is delayed is a change in business circumstances that was never updated on FoSCoS. A Surat food processing unit relocated its warehouse two years ago. It never filed an amendment. It will face questions during renewal. An Ahmedabad restaurant changed its bank account after switching banks. The renewal fee payment will be rejected by FoSCoS until the bank details are corrected. These are admin gaps that the renewal process catches.
What Happens When a Renewal Is Filed Late or Not at All
The ₹100 per day late penalty under Section 31 is the first consequence. It accrues from the day after expiry until the renewal is either processed or the license is formally lapsed. It does not cap itself. A Basic Registration that expired three months ago and was renewed yesterday carries a late fee of roughly ₹9,000. This is before the government renewal fee is paid. The second consequence is operational. Food aggregators run automated checks against the FoSCoS database. Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon Fresh — all do this. An expired FSSAI number is flagged automatically. The platform suspends the listing until a valid certificate is uploaded.
The third consequence is legal. Operating a food business after the license has fully lapsed is an offence under Section 63 of the FSSAI Act, 2006. The penalty is up to ₹5 lakh. The imprisonment is up to six months. FinTax24 tracks every FSSAI renewal date from the day the certificate is issued. We send reminders 60, 45, and 30 days before expiry. The renewal is filed within the safe window, not after the penalty clock has started.
