Eligibility Guide

Import Export Code Eligibility

Do you import or export goods or services? Then you need an IEC from DGFT. It is free, needs a valid PAN, and never expires. Some firms do not need one.

An Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) is a 10-digit business ID from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). You need it if:

  • Importers and exporters — You import or export goods into or out of India. Some exemptions apply.
  • Manufacturer-exporters — Even if you make goods only for export, you need an IEC to ship internationally.
  • Service exporters — If you export services (IT, software, consulting, healthcare) to foreign clients, you may need an IEC.

Exemptions: Agricultural cooperative societies, government bodies, and individuals importing for personal use (not business) do not need an IEC. But if you later need to import or export for business, you must get an IEC first.

Key requirement: You must have a valid PAN. Your IEC links to your PAN and does not expire. For partnerships and LLPs, the IEC is in the entity name. For individuals, it is in your name.

DGFT portal: Apply online at dgft.gov.in. No fee is charged.
